Roulette Terms

New to roulette? If you step up to a roulette wheel at a real Canadian casino, you might feel out of place when you hear people talking. But don't worry. We've got everything you need to know. Just familiarize yourself with this roulette lingo and you'll be good to go.

American Wheel - a roulette wheel with the numbers 1-36 plus a zero and a double zero, making 38 numbered slots in total

Chip - a betting token with a designated cash value that you use in online roulette and many other different online casino games

Column Bet - a bet on a column of 12 numbers, marked out on the roulette table. These are 1, 4, 7, 10, etc., 2, 5, 8, 11, etc. or 3, 6, 9, 12, etc. A winning column bet pays out 2:1

Corner Bet - a bet on four numbers on the table which intersect on one corner, such as 1, 2, 4 or 5. A winning corner bet pays out 8:1

Double Street Quad - a betting system in roulette which incorporates two six-line bets, a corner bet and one number straight-up. Players bet two chips on each six-line bets and one chip on each of the others.

Dozen Bet - a bet on a set of 12 consecutive numbers, either 1-12, 13-24 or 25-36. A winning dozen bet pays out 2:1

En Prison - a rule specific to French Roulette. If the ball lands on zero, a player who has lost an even-money bet can leave their ball 'en prison' (in prison) and attempt to win it back on the next spin

European Wheel - a roulette wheel with the numbers 1-36 and a single zero. European Roulette and French Roulette both use this wheel

Five Quad System - a roulette betting system involving five separate corner bets and one number straight-up. This bet covers 21 slots on the roulette wheel at any one time.

Five-number Bet - a bet unique to American Roulette, covering 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. this bet pays out 6:1 and is the bet with the highest house edge.

Grand Martingale - a variation on the Martingale bet (see below) where the player adds one betting unit to the doubled bet after a loss.

High or low - an even-money bet of 18 numbers, either 1-18 (low) or 19-36 (high).

Inside Bet - a bet on the numbers on the inside of the roulette wheel. This includes bets on one, two, three, four, five or six numbers at any one time.

La Partage - like En Prison, this is a rule unique to French Roulette. This rule involves a player having half his losing even-money bet returned to him if the ball lands on zero.

Live Dealer - an online roulette variant using a live stream from a casino or studio, where a real-life dealer spins a real roulette wheel rather than relying on a computerised system.

Martingale - a betting system which involves doubling your bet amount after a loss.

Multi-ball Roulette - a version of online roulette with one wheel and several balls spinning on each round of betting.

Multi-wheel Roulette - a version of online roulette with multiple wheels in play simultaneously, and one ball on each wheel. Both this and multi-ball roulette are online inventions.

Neighbour Bet - a series of straight-up bets on a group numbers which are next to each other on the wheel but not on the table.

Outside Bet - a bet on a grouping of numbers marked out on the outside of the table. These can be 2:1 bets such as columns or dozens, or even-money bets such as red, black, odd, even, high or low.

Payout - the amount received by a player for a winning bet. A payout table will be available on most good Canadian online roulette sites in 2024.

Quad Bet - another term for a corner bet (see above).

Six-line Bet - a bet on six numbers, taking the form of two adjacent rows of three on the roulette table. Examples include 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 or 28, 29, 30, 31, 32 or 33. A winning six-line bet pays out 5:1

Spingo - an online casino game which combines elements of roulette and bingo.

Split - a split bet is a bet on two adjacent numbers. It pays out 17:1 for the win.

Straight-up - when you bet on one number it is known as a 'straight-up' bet. If you win then you get 35:1 on your money.

Street - a bet on three numbers in a row on the roulette table, such as 1, 2 and 3 or 10, 11 and 12. A six-line bet is sometimes called a double street bet.

Welcome bonus - one of the most important phrases for online roulette players. A welcome bonus is the extra money you can receive just for signing up for real-money play at an online casino for the first time.
